I'm not sure about the 90s bikes, but on the 80s bike the clutch switch is a simple 2 post job and easy to test. The gear indicator switch, which includes the neutral indicator, is also pretty simple to test with a multimeter. Sometimes they get gunked up and need to be cleaned out. Again, no idea what the 90s bikes actually have going on there but I assume it's something similar.
