Quick update for anyone who may experience what I did. Changing the neutral switch fixed the sometimes yes/ sometimes no problem for starting. The neutral light always comes on and the bike always starts now. However, it must still be in neutral to start. My local bike shop says this is simply a bad clutch switch on the handlebar. I ordered one of those but it hasn't arrived yet.
