RPMs don't matter. I tried holding it in different positions when it didn't work thinking gravity might make it easier for the switch to close... no effect.
My new flasher came in yesterday. It's not round with a metal case. It's rectangular with a plastic case. But it plugged right in and works perfectly (for the 30 seconds I played with it).
