Problem solved.
For an unknown reason, when text was dragged and dropped, the right-hand margin symbol either vanishes or, more likely, moves to the left-hand side and hides itself behind the indent and left-side text-wrap indicators. The result is that only one character is visible. Sorry for the confusion but it does confirm that it has occurred before to me.
