FreeBSD is my first choice for a firewall, but as a web developer I
don't really have much use for it otherwise.  The ports are usually a
little too out-dated for new development.

Linux makes great application and database servers.  You can't beat
Debian for a server, and Ubuntu for a desktop.  I try to steer clear
of the RPM-based distros as much as possible.
