I might be thinking of another company, but that sounds like the group
that "advertises" by sending letters to random people to alert them
that it's time to renew their domain with them. When I used to work
helpdesk for a web host, we'd get lots of calls along the lines of:

"Why is this company telling me I need to renew my domain. I thought
you guys handle that."
"We do. They aren't affiliated with us at all."
"Well then, how'd they get my address? You said you wouldn't sell my
contact info!"

Even more fun were the calls that started with customers confirming
that they'd just paid this outside company for their domain renewal
even though we provided an automatic credit to pay for their domain as
part of their hosting plan. They would transfer the domain out from
our system, where it two clicks away from a free renewal and send a
check to cover it. Just because this letter came USPS and had their
name on it, they'd assume it was legit and sign a check.

Maybe I'm in the wrong business. :(
