I started a new session. Everything works now! Thanks! Connect specifying DSN, or connect specifying driver, etc. Connects to the specified database. Everything!
No environment variables needed, and evidently interfered somehow. So I think it was missing the symbolic links from /etc/unixODBC/ files to /etc/.
