Generally when you have a wedged modem, the sysop intervention involves power-cycling the modem. Now, what you could do is obtain an X-10 Firecracker and several power modules, so the cycling of the power of the external modems could be automated. This is what I did many moons ago when my Comcast cable modem got wedged: I reset it with a phone call to my home system, Asterisk, and a special PIN.
