We observed a moment of silence at Watkins earlier today as I decommissioned our very last HP Procurve 4000 switch. If your requirements include 10/100 Mbit ports (up to 80) or 100FX ports with SC connectors, gigabit 1000SX (did I get that right?) with SC connectors, or even gigabit copper, have we got a deal for you!
There are 10 slots on a 4000 switch, and you may interchangeably plug in cards that do eight 10/100 copper ports, 4 100FX fiber ports, 1 gigabit fiber port or 1 gigabit copper Ethernet. The 4000 is a managed switch, supporting up to 30 VLANs. They're rock solid reliable and yes, they are *still* covered by HP's lifetime warranty. Our most recent problem was in 2010 and HP shipped the replacement fan assembly without so much as a hint of a question. They are not quiet, given they have a couple of fans for cooling. The management interface isn't fast, but the switches do a great job at wire speed and without any complaint. They are rack mountable in a 4U (7") form factor. One or two have redundant supplies, the others do not. We have four, and it's first-come-first-served. We'll be happy to include such spare cards as we have in stock. We've moved on to the 2600 and 2800 series switches, so the 4000s must go. We'd like to find them good homes. They are good switches, even if you just do a complete reset (we'll help you with that) and use them as an enormous unmanaged switch. I know, the demand will be huge. You may pick up your prize at Watkins College starting Monday the 8th. If you're not in the immediate Nashville area, we can hold your switch for a reasonable amount of time.
