Back in the dark ages when the original pistol style bar code scanners
came out, they were RS-232 serial. Someone came up with the bright idea
of connecting the scanner in-line with the AT then PS2 style keyboard
input and thus the Keyboard Wedge was born. The suckers would wedge in
more ways than one...
Fast forward to the full deployment of USB. Now days, such bar code
scanners come with USB and do not have to be connected to a system
through the same port as the keyboard; just any old USB port will do
nicely. There is enough cooperating firmware around that allows
keyboards and such auxiliary inputs to play nice together.
So my challenge, which I believe I registered here once before, is to
come up with a generalized box that might enable any old serial
interface device, specifically a scale, to connect to a computer via USB
to capture whatever reading as if that reading was a keyboard entry. I
have customers (plural) who desire such a thing. Arduino? Raspberry
Pi? Dumber than that? Said device shall require something of a
"trigger" that causes a reading to be taken and posted to the USB port.
