Suggestions?
Jack,
If weight isn't a big deal, I have a Lenovo W520 that I love. Great
nVidia graphics and USB3 & an i7, to boot. On eBay now for $350-$500.
Sturdy and solid, but heavy.

Since I was linked to the scene of the crime... :)
Jack got one of four or five T61s I got "back then" as an attempt at
continuing a business. I still have one of the bunch running fine
(touches wood). But the R61s and the T61s have all pretty much expired.
My modus operandi is to not pay more than $250-$300 for an off-lease
Thinkpad. I got my wife a T500 about a year ago; it came with Windows 7
on a 160GB drive which I promptly imaged with clonezilla, installed the
image on a 500GB drive and then installed Ubuntu for a dual boot.
Running great.
About three months ago (after a couple more T61 meltdowns), I bought
myself a T510 (Intel i5, 8GB memory, 500GB disk, Windows 7). Again, I
set out for the dual boot scheme. Because the native drive was 500GB, I
could only shrink the existing Windows partition to 265GB. Tough. I'm
getting along just fine with this dual boot setup.
I still watch for such things on eBay. I favor the T5nn series over the
W5nn series just because; either is fine. Something to watch for is the
video resolution. This T510 is only a 1366x768 as opposed to a
1600x900. These old eyes are probably okay with that. If I had to do
the T510 over again, I'd look for an Intel i7, and the 1600x900 video.
