thx for getting back to me neil. i did check out your suggestion
and started an xterm +ut

the who command now shows

%who
simon tty1 Apr 20 18:22
simon pts/3 Apr 21 17:47

where the pts/3 entry is the new xterm. however when i
i still do not get any kind of notification when i recieve
new mail in this "good" xterm. any other ideas on this?

also do you happen to know what entry i should have in the
.Xdefaults to get the +ut set for every xterm that gets
started?
