If you don't need notification right inside your xterm, Simon, you
might look into an X-based utility like xbiff or xmailbox.  They
watch any mail file you tell them to -- for instance, the
/var/spool/mail/simon file, the inbox folder (file) in Netscape,
and so on.

If you do need notification in your xterm, you'll need to do some
checking of permisions and other things -- as Neil and Dan said.
This is tricky stuff sometimes.
