I completely agree with you about MLB free agency. Prob why I don't follow baseball as much anymore.
And the league (MLB) is simply not fair, the rich teams keep getting better and the poorer ones worse, but sometimes they can surprise you which I find amazing! I believe a good, healthy SOM league is competitive. Nobody ever quits because they get bored with their team... or frustrated because they cannot get better. Personally, I would find the league very boring if I was a perrenial powerhouse... kind of like college football. Every healthy league prob has a formula in place to help poor teams get better, maybe it can be improved? When you are on top, you might not see the difficulties a bottom tier manager does? Anyway, about your question: Suppose in our league, we are only allowed to keep 20 players... I know, gasp! But that leaves 20 roster positions... So every year you turn over half your team! Wow! Tough decisions with keeping veterans, prospects, ... Then the free agent draft re-distributes the rest of them, teams draft as they see their need. I do not know if this will be an improvement in competitiveness, but I know it is fun ! I absolutely love the salary cap. If one is not in place, why would you ever move a player like Pujols?! It takes a year or two, maybe three until it starts getting painful keeping such a superstar but eventually it does!!! This salary cap definitely improves competitiveness. And, best of all, it is fun ! Please consider the purpose of this discussion... it is not the disgruntled grumbling from a team with a 15 game losing streak. I find trying to turn around the cubs most interesting especially with the difficulties involved. I believe for a healthy SOM league to flourish it must be competitive and fun.
