Use regular notepad, then. Tabs make Notepad++ better, but if you want multiple
instances, you can use "-multiInst" on the shortcut. You can also change the
registry entry to have that parameter on the command line. Search for
"notepad++.exe".

hmm cool.. is there a way to make the box appear automatically while you type?
(i.e. the effect of always pressing ctrl-shift-space, except if there is only
one word just show but don't complete.)

This regexp only specifies _where_ you look for something, but not for what.
Try something like ^(.) and replace this by @\1 where you replace @ by that
character you want to add.
