Well put, [~ctubbsii]. I agree with everything you say.
A bit off to the side: I think one of the best lesser-realized "features" of
Accumulo falls into the fact that column families are not fixed. To this
extent, I think your final point about creating this functionality in an
"expert" mindset further enhances the ability to support unlimited column
families.
The feature in its simplest sense does conflict with the original idea behind
locality groups, but is that always "bad"? I'm not sure, but it's definitely
different.
Do you have any ideas on how to present such a feature that would avoid
steering the common user toward it? Is healthy warning/documentation sufficient?
