I don't understand how it breaks usability. Can you provide an example?

Correct - not sure how you would do this with Log4J
bq. Lots of places like to have stable ports (for security or monitoring
reasons). Maybe there's a better approach to be had than resorting to random
ports?
Agreed, currently the tserver.client.ports property does not take a list or a
range. I think that would be the solution here.
