 Review comment:
   synchronized(state) is still not safe. Maybe SendThread.close() and 
SendThread.startConnect() synchronize on different objects because state is 
mutable and can be changed between SendThread.close() and 
SendThread.startConnect().
   I prefer synchronized(this) guard.
