I think Prince was hoping to get a lot of more out of the AI performance - the fact that Simon chastised him in the press, and the reports about him showing up last minute and leaving right after - I'm sure all of that was part of the plan to generate some controversy and increase album sales. Maybe the $350 ticket price in Vegas was also meant to cause some ruckus. And if the GMA NYC show is truly cancelled, maybe Prince swapped one for the other (decided to do AI and forgo GMA).
Unfortunately, like Derek has been saying, it's too little, too late. No one cares enough anymore. 2 weeks ago "3121" was #93 on the Billboard album chart, last week it was #114, and this week it's #79. Hardly a big deal.
