I'm also a recent newcomer to piping. In his basic maintenance leaflet, Colin Ross recommends liquid paraffin, but it appears he has recently changed his mind in favour of Johnson's Baby Oil Gel. We heard this during a Pipe Maintenance session at the recent Whitley Bay Piping Week. I don't know how you're fixed, but I can vouch for the high level of support you would get if you were to attend meetings of the London Group. They are held on the first Wednesday evening of each month (except August) from about 7pm, at the Calthorpe Arms in Grays Inn Road.
