Depending on the length of your trip you could follow the idea of one piper here who for a weekend workshop would pack his clothes in his hard pipe case and check it and put his pipes in a soft holdall to carry on. As soon as possible after arrival he would switch pipes to case and clothes to holdall thus protecting the pipes properly during his stay, then do the reverse to travel home.

I know that this was recently discussed on this forum but I cannot find
anything suitable for carry-on luggage. Any recommendations for a
travel bag for NSPs when taking them on airlines? Not checking them in
as Ryanair charge a premium if they know it is a musical instrument but
   want something strong but light.
I know a sax gig bag was mentioned and I was looking form something
   similar. Any other ideas?
