We paid 6.5m for Fletcher, which was a bargain, but was our club record. Its such little money.
I can't be arsed going over this all again, but we couldn't attract quality players because we didn't want to pay the wages. We spent 15 million a year less than the clubs we were competing against. To put that into perspective imagine getting rid of any five of our Premier League players that were rubbish (Henry, Edwards etc) and rather than paying them 20k per week each, get five players of the quality that they can demand 80k per week. Then ask how we would have performed with five players of that quality instead of the cheap option.
