I use this setup now, it is called split-brain DNS. I have not found any
problems yet, but you must set it up correctly. One thing to do is make
local dns records for resources that also exist externally, pointing to
where you want you rinternal users to go.

I would have to agree, perhaps the book is wrong.

So there are no downsides to using the same name for primary internal and
external root domains?

Externally we have a websit called xyz.com.  Internally, if we use the
same name as the root domain, what are the downsides?
