Hi guys/gals,

I thought I would follow up on this as I have found the reason.

XP, when loading on boot up, does not wait for the network connections
before giving you the log on screen. This is a new 'feature' of XP. It's the
Synchronous and Asynchronous thing. By default, XP loads Asynchronously, not
waiting for the network and you can log on using cached credentials. You can
overide this with a local GP on the computer or, if you have .NET servers,
you can create a GP for all PC's. It's in the Computer Configuration | Admin
Templates | System | Logon | Always wait for the network at computer startup
and logon. If you enable this, it works. I enabled this option on the PC, to
an image of it, RIS'd a box and Office was installed via GP.

Cheers,
Tony

That's insteresting to know. We have an MCS guy here and before he raises
this to his colleagues in Redmond, he wants me to set up the same thing on a
Windows 2000 server to test out. I also know of another company here doing
the same thing on a Windows 2000 server and it works. The only difference
being that they are going with the original version of XP on a RIS image
whereas I'm using a customized riprep image. Off to the lab I go...

Hi

I am running a Windows XP Professional computer against a Windows 2000
Server with Active Directory and GPO software. I experience the same problem
you described: no software install when the computer starts for the first
time, but the software installs after rebooting. This problem exists
regardless of installation method of WinXPPro. In my event log, WinXPPro
tells my that something went wrong during the GPO software and it will try
after next reboot (I dont remember the exact words...)

My point is that I think the issue is Windows XP Professional and not your
server.

Hi,

Just wondering if any of you are using XP Advanced Server (Build 3505) and
are having issues with Group Policy. Here's my dilemma.

I'm using RIS to deploy our XP Pro image. It's completley unattended and
installing in under 15 mins (using a RIPrep image). We have a group policy
that installs Office XP. It's a Computer applied setting. When the machine
is finished being RIS'd, it does one last reboot. At this point, all is
complete, including the machine being in the domain. Upon booting up, the
managed software should install but it doesn't. If I log in once - local or
into the domain - log out and reboot, the group policy gets applied upon
boot up. If I log in for the first time, run gpresult, the information
provided tells me that the GP for installing Office XP was infact applied,
even though there is no Office XP installed. I have heard that if you use
the default AD Users and Computers from the Start Menu, create a new Group
Policy and edit it there, it will not work in the fashion you would expect.
I have created all Group Policies from snap-in's and applied them to the AD
Users and Computers using a snap-in. The Security on the GP is correct as
well. Has anyone else come across this or know where I can start looking?

Thanks,
Tony
