I have 2 domains in my W2K Forest and tree, in a single site: ds.company.com and newyork.ds.company.com For now I only have one DC per domain (until I get more hardware). Our company's DNS is run on a Linux box, running BIND 8.2.1 so it supports dynamic updates and SRV records. I am not running DNS on any Windows 2000 servers or DCs. When I installed the forest root domain computer, (named: mark.ds.company.com) it had all 5 FSMO masters plus it was made a Global Catalog Server. When I added the child domain (silver.newyork.ds.mda.ca) it took the three FSMO roles for the new domain, but it was NOT made a Global Catalog server. Now, when I try to access AD from each other's DC I get errors, for example: if I try to add a user from ds.company.com to the Administrators group in newyork.ds.mda.ca while logged into silver.newyork.ds.mda.ca as the local administrator, I get a pop-up error that says: "The following Active Directory error occurred: The Global Catalog verification failed. The Global Catalog is not available or does not support the operation. Some part of the directory is not available". In despearation I made "silver", the DC of the Child Domain, a Global Catalog server as well, even though both domains are in the same site, but with the same error messge. Is this a DNS problem ? Am I not able to locate my Global Catalog through the Linux DNS servers ? How can I examine the DNS tables in Linux from Windows 2000 to verify that all of my services are listed there ? Any other troubleshooting tips anybody may have ?
