"Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS records failed

Above is what you have to fix. Is BIND configured to accept updates from
your DCs? It may not be automatic.

And as far as the other person said, that the _underscore zones MUST be
delegated to W2K. I disagree. Our Forest here is fully supported by
UNIX/BIND 8.x which is administered by Lucent QIP. We have set the default
to reject updates to DDNS unless the IP address that wants to do the update
is specifically authorized. When we build a DC, one of the steps is to go
into QIP and authorize the DCs IP address to update BIND.

Subject: FW: Windows 2000 with UNIX DNS Servers

Hi Ben

Yes, there is are errors in the System Event Log on my child DC as follows:

"Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS records failed
with the following error:
No DNS servers configured for local system."

and yet, the IPCONFIG on that server seems to be okay, viz:

C:\>ipconfig /all

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

        Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : gold
        Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . : Newyork.ds.mda.ca
        Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
        IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . : No
        WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . : No
        DNS Suffix Search List.. . . . : Newyork.ds.mda.ca

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : newyork.ds.mda.ca
        Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Compaq NC3163 Fast Ethernet NIC
        Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-50-8B-DC-C3-9C
        DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
        IP Address. . . . . . . .. . . . . : 1xx.yy.128.187
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.240.0
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 1xx.yyy.128.1
        DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 1xx.yyy.131.39
                                            1xx.yyy.131.40
        Primary WINS Server . . . . . . : 1xx.yyy.131.116
        Secondary WINS Server . . . . . . : 1xx.yyy.131.117

So I am not sure where the configuration error is in the Domain Controller,
that is causing the error to appear in my Event log - any ideas ?

Make sure all DCs list the same set of dynamic-update-enabled DNS servers.

Try NETDIAG, DCDIAG, and NLTEST (search the MS KB for tips on using
these).

Check the logs on the DNS server for any errors, especially "update
denied" messages.

Check the logs on the DCs for any messages from the "NetLogon" service
about errors registering DNS records.
