Been a while, but if I remember, Novell used 802.3 for 3.x, and switched to 802.2 for 4.x. Hope that helps.
Might I suggest a neat little fire or something that destroys all equipment, and copies of the NOS? Then you would be able to tell them that there is no way to get new media, so they have to upgrade or switch! j/k, but the thought is fun. W.
