Ghost is pretty good at dealing with different types of hard drives and partitions.

The key to all this is to use SysPrep which will remove all identifying info from the 
reference machine and add the .cab files for the various hardware components.  When 
the image is applied a mini setup program runs which detects hardware (video, nic, 
etc) and installs appropriate drivers from the cabs.  I haven't had the need to 
install 3rd party drivers, but it should be possible to do that as well.
