We use Powerquest Drive Image on W2K and sysprep.exe. Works great. We have identical hardware profiles.
If I remember correctly MS says that if you have differing hardware profiles, but require identical Windows installations, use RIS. You will need a 2K server and a dedicated NTFS partition on it. However, if you read up on sysprep, it very clearly states the limitations it has. Typically sysprep is not going to work when you change motherboards (and chipsets). Personally, I think that when you try to load an old image onto a new system with a great deal of different hardware, you are just opening up a can of worms. I have been using ghost ever since I started here, and I would not trust ghosting to a completely different PC. However, if you think it is worth the inherent risk and possible additional downtime, not to mention extra work for you, by all means, go ahead. BTW, I have been ghosting Win2k workstations since either 6.0 or 6.5 (sorry, can't remember which), and they handle NTFS5 partitions just fine. What version of Ghost are you running? Ghost is pretty good at dealing with different types of hard drives and partitions. The key to all this is to use SysPrep which will remove all identifying info from the reference machine and add the .cab files for the various hardware components. When the image is applied a mini setup program runs which detects hardware (video, nic, etc) and installs appropriate drivers from the cabs.
