Slice? I will assume that you mean partition. I've not heard the term slice
before. :-)

I've used Ghost since version 6.5 and currently use version 7.5. Vast
improvement in product w/version change. All support capturing/restoring
from/to partitions or entire disks since 6.5. Partition doesn't necessarily
have to be formatted w/NTFS 5 before you restore to it; it just has to
exist.

Hope this helps.

Paul

Ok, I guess I'll give it a shot then.
One last question, what versions support loading onto a slice formatted with
NTFS v5?
Symantec's site isn't overly informative, save for alot of marketing talk.

I've swapped out old motherboards w/AMD 300MHz processors and replaced them
with newer ones w/AMD 1200+ and 1500+ processors. Sorry, I don't recall
the MB model numbers (VIA and Asus were maufacturers). Ghost image
contained W2K, Office 2K, other SW specific to our company. It's a crap
shoot whether Windows will boot up after the image is loaded on the new
computer, but I've had success around 70% to 80% of the time. If you run
sysprep before creating the ghost image, usually Windows will recognize the
difference in hardware.

Trying it will still take considerably less time than building the box up
from scratch.

Does Ghost allow installing images to computers with different hardware than
the original?
Say I move from an old K6 box or something, to a brand new dual Xeon
workstation?

Thanks

I use Symantec's Ghost for such things. Ghost makes a binary image of a
workstation drive that can be quickly reapplied to the drive. Install a
reference machine with the OS, patches, and all desired software. Use
Win2K's SysPrep.exe prior to making the Ghost image to allow Windows to run
a mini-setup program when the image is reapplied. Run Ghost to make the
image(s) which can then be stored on a server or burned onto CD(s).
Reinstalls take minutes instead of hours.
