Compaq still has BIOS updates (called ROMpaqs) for systems with 486 processors on their site... surely you can find updates for your PII system there.
If there isn't an updated ROMpaq for your machine that supports the larger disks, well, you'll need to wither stick with the 6 GB disk or get BIOS translation software from your hard disk manufacturer. Subject: RE: XP Install problem... This is an old compaq and the BIOS detects both the 6gig and 40gig Western Digital hard drives with no problem, well atleast it sees them. It's odd how it simply will not install the OS. I've attempted to search that Compaq-HP site and haven't had any luck locating an updated BIOS for this system, a Compaq Deskpro PII. Unfortunately for me there was no software that came with the hard drive. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:bounce-nt2000-136604@;ls.swynk.com]On Behalf Of Ryan Malayter Sent: Monday, October 21, 2002 11:25 AM To: NT 2000 Discussions Subject: RE: XP Install problem... Another problem might be with the boot block of the disk itself. As I recall, some Compaq machines used to have the majority of their BIOS code stored in the first sectors of the hard disk, rather than in NVRAM on the motherboard as witgh other machines. I don't know if Compaq still does this, or if your machine is one of them, but if it got erased somehow, you're going to have trouble. Compaq's site should have the tools (probably a boot floppy than will update the disk) you need to fix the problem. Even though it doesn't sound like much today, 40GB was unimaginably large just a couple or three years ago. Try updating the BIOS on the machine to the latest available version, and if that doesn't fix the problem, then try installing the BIOS Head/Cylinder/Sector translating software that (probably) came with the drive. I need a quick resolution to what I know is a simple problem. I have an old Compaq that I'm trying to reload XP on. This is a 6gig harddrive w/256 RAM. I was trying to add a 40gig harddrive to it and started running into problems. After finally getting the system to recognize both drives and the CD-ROM I now get an error when trying to re-install the OS from CD. The first error I got stated that the harddrive was corrupt. When I went to try and repair it, I started getting another error. The error is stating the setup can't load or unable to detect a system.? file. It does this regardless of what XP Professional cd I use. If I try a w2k pro cd I get BSOD. ANyone familiar with this? Again I had XP running on this system previously. I get the same error even if I attempt to return to the same initial setup. ------ You are subscribed as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe send a blank email to %%email.unsub%% ------ You are subscribed as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe send a blank email to %%email.unsub%% ------ You are subscribed as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe send a blank email to %%email.unsub%% ------ You are subscribed as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe send a blank email to %%email.unsub%% ------ You are subscribed as [email protected] Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
