Another problem might be with the boot block of the disk itself. As I recall, some Compaq machines used to have the majority of their BIOS code stored in the first sectors of the hard disk, rather than in NVRAM on the motherboard as witgh other machines. I don't know if Compaq still does this, or if your machine is one of them, but if it got erased somehow, you're going to have trouble. Compaq's site should have the tools (probably a boot floppy than will update the disk) you need to fix the problem.
