What Paul describes is pretty much the way my shop works things here as well.
Now, if there is some major project, or if we (the shop) has had to stay later than usual several nights in a row, we might take off a few hours early on Friday or just make up with a half hour here and there through the week. We're fairly leanient in that regard. I consider myself lucky; we mostly stick to 40 hour weeks. My understanding is (others, please correct me or confirm if necessary) that overtime comes with the admin job. I've worked in a shop where 60 hours is expected, and you should be thankful if management even acknowledges any time worked over that.
