Does it do what you want it to do? If so, why change things? Those
little home NAT boxes do not do very much, but they are very
low-maintenance.

I recommend OpenBSD. (Disclaimer: I am biased.) OpenBSD has an excellent
security record. You have much greater control of what gets installed and
what does not (i.e., no need to install a web browser just because Microsoft
says you have to). The firewall included with OpenBSD is very powerful and
flexible. OpenBSD is much less resource-intensive, so it will likely
perform better than the Windows-based solution (sure, Win2000 will run on a
PII/233, but it is likely to be agonizingly slow).

Playgrounds/testbeds. Install new software you're curious about and see
how it works. Install a BSD or a Linux and play with one of them. Use one
as a honey-pot.
