I had the same problem and here what Veritas said -------------------------------------------------------------------- You have mentioned in query that error"Unable to initialize Remote Agent for Windows NT/2000 - performing standard backup" has occurred, so as a preliminary step, please confirm that remote agent have been installed on your remote machine and the remote agent services are working.
Remote agent has to be installed on each remote machine you want to backup up.This is a paid option for Windows NT and Windows 2000 server. Remote agent for Windows XP, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows NT workstation, Windows 98 and Windows 95 is free but it has to be install on each of them. Refer the following technotes to determine if the Backup Exec Remote Agent is installed and working on a remote computer: Title:"How to determine if the Backup Exec Remote Agent is installed on a remote computer?" URL:-http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/237571.htm For full compatibility and optimal backups, it is important that the version of the Remote Agent (Agent Accelerator) matches the version of theBackup Exec engine being run on the media server. To determine the version of the Remote Agent, refer to the following technote: Title:"How to check what version of the Remote Agent for Windows NT/2000 or the Backup Exec Agent Accelerator is installed" URL:-http://www.seer.support.veritas.com/docs/239316.htm If issue persists, please refer to following guidelines: 1.It might the case related with Apple talk protocol, which affects Backup Exec while communicating with the remote agent that is installed on the target system. The issue can be resolved by reinstalling the respective protocol and disabling it. For more detail information, refer to the following technote: Title:-"Job log reports "Remote Agent for Windows NT/2000 not present - performing standard backup", although the remote agent is installed and running on the target system, in VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows NT and Windows 2000." URL:-http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/251111.htm 2.This issue may get resolved by increasing the send receive timeout .For more information, refer to the following technote: Title:"Backup Exec for Windows NT and Windows 2000 v 8.6 reports the error, "Remote Agent for Windows NT/2000 not found. Performing standard backup." when backing up a Remote server." URL:-http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/240173.htm 3.This issue may occurred because of a name resolution problem on the Backup Exec server. The easiest way to resolve the issue is to add an entry to the LMHOSTS file on the Backup Exec server. For more information, refer to the following technote: Title:"The Backup Exec for Windows NT and Windows 2000 job log files report "Remote Agent for Windows NT/2000 not present - performing standard backup" when the Remote Agent is installed and running on the target system." URL:-http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/234471.htm 4.If OFO (Open File Option) is also used for backup then please lower the Minimum Quite Time for OFO on the remote machine with remote agent issue. For more information, refer to following technote: Title:"When backing up a remote server using Open File Option (OFO) the message in the job history log is " Agent Accelerator not present - performing standard backup" on one or all of the drives. And the Backup Exec Remote Agent Debug log will report "SnapVolume Failed w/ Error: 0xe0001001" URL:-http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/247996.htm If OFO is not installed on the remote server, perform the following steps to resolve the issue: 1) Lower the "Set Remote agent priority" to "Below Normal Priority". If this does not resolve the issue, kindly lower it to "Lowest priority". For further information, refer to technote given below: Title 1:-"Unable to initialize Remote Agent" error occurs even when the Backup Exec 8.x Remote Agent service is confirmed as started." URL:-http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/233217.htm Title 2:-"Can the priority level of the Backup Exec Remote Agent be changed?" URL:-http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/235691.htm If above steps does not work, kindly perform silent install of remote agent on all the remote system. To perform silent install on the systems (Windows NT/2000), refer to the technote given below: Title:"How to perform a silent installation of the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows NT and 2000, previously known as the Agent Accelerator, from a Command Prompt." URL:-http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/230790.htm You are also facing the error "Unable to attach to \\SERVER1\System?State.The device cannot be found." One cause of this error is if the "Restrict Anonymous" option has been enabled on the Backup Exec server reporting the error. "Restrict Anonymous" is a key that allows administrators to prevent anonymous log on by a user, also known as Null session connections, to list account names or enumerate share names. It can be also used to determine whether a user can issue anonymous query with a tool like LDAP to a directory service like the Exchange Directory,Microsoft's Active Directory which is part of the system state, or Novell's NDS. To resolve this issue under 8.6, perform the following steps: 1. Use Regedit* or Regedt32* to modify the registry 2. Edit the registry key value "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VERITAS\Backup Exec\Engine\NTFS\Restrict Anonymous Support" 3. Change the value from zero (0) to one (1) 4. Stop and restart the Backup Exec services. *Note: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor can have disastrous results on a server operating system. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Bruce Fyfe, Network Engineer LAKESIDE INDUSTRIES (425) 313-2600 [EMAIL PROTECTED] -----Original Message----- From: Adam Smith [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, February 05, 2003 4:54 AM To: NT 2000 Discussions Subject: Re: Backup Exec On Wed, Feb 05, 2003 at 09:57:33AM +0200, [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: > > i didn't even know that i had a backup password > how do i stop and restart the agent It is a service.
