This usually fixes the problem. Faster then rebooting and doesn't down the
server for anyone connecting to it.
I have seen this happen when a SCSI driver has been corrupted.
Is your backup device internal to the server or and external library?
In my situation I have an external library. If the library is powered off
before the server is shut down the SCSI driver gets messed up. Reinstalling
the SCSI driver resolves it. It sounds stupid but it actually works. This
solution was given to me by Compaq support so apparently they have seen this
before.

Or just stop the service. That'll do it.

I my experience when this kind of thing happens it is usually down to an
alert waiting for user response. Check the Alerts tab to see if there is any
entries there. Sometimes you will get an Alert prompting you to Eject or
Remove the tape. It may not do anything until you do so, it will just wait
for you to respond to that alert.

Other things you could, obviously, do is check the NT Event Viewer (assuming
its a Windows server) to see if there is any service or application errors
there re Backup Exec itself.
