Our users connect mainly through 56k dialup from client sites, with a
couple of ISDN and a few Cable or DSL users. The problem doesn't seem
to mind!

I specifically had this problem with Cable connected users. Dial up, DSL
or any other connection works perfect. I worked with the cable company,
Cisco and Microsoft. Nobody can seem to figure out why it won't work
right.

I am willing to put my money on the cable company as the fault. But
their level of support is horrible.

The clients that are having this problem... would they happen to be
using a cable connection to the internet?

Just curious if I am alone with this issue.

We have a similar VPN problem that *seems* to only affects some users:

User connects to ISP, picking up dns server details from them along the
way.

User then connects to VPN, getting wins, dns servers, etc from the VPN
server. This can be confirmed by an ipconfig /all.

When user tries to connect to anything on our network by name, either
UNC or even FQDN, it fails. Running nslookup, we find it is using the
ISP DNS server.

We worked round it with a hosts file, but is there any way of forcing
the VPN IP config to be the higher preference one?

Also, any idea why it only happens to some clients? (mix of winxp SP1
and win2k SP3, all domain members)

I've seen two shows (wife likes it) but it's f*ing everywhere on the
local radio stations so I can grasp the popularity.

As far as HOSTS files according to the name resolution sequence I got
from Mastering Windows 2000 Server
http://www.datsuns.com/geekage/lookups.gif
the HOSTS file will speed up FQDN lookup, which is fine for AD and
Internet names but not UNC's.

American Idol???

Please don't tell me you watch that cr*p.

BTW,
Roger is right.

However I will always "on my own computer" use host files to reduce name
resolution time.

Definitely not a viable option for hundreds of VPN clients.

American Idol has Simon, we have Roger. "Brutally accurate" would be a
fitting description. He's right in band-aids fix things now but makes
the overall picture worse. After six or seven band-aids you're probably
better off blowing away the infrastructure. I am currently sifting
through a network put together in band-aid fashion and it's like trying
to cut grass with scissors.

The difference is that your opinion, as you call it, is a crutch that
both fails to solve the issue he's seeking assistance with, and actually
adds to the complexity of addressing the root cause of the issue.
