You won't get any DNS resolution if this service isn't running. Therefore,
to have successful DNS resolution you will need it running on the client you
are troubleshooting.

Would there be any valid reason to turn this service OFF for W2K? By the
description it looks like no; "Manages network configuration by registering
and updating IP addresses and DNS names".

I ask because I'd like to know if seeing if this service is stopped would
helpful for troubleshooting resolution issues.
