Fight it. Just because they don't have one doesn't mean you can't push for one! I never settle for status quo if there are valid reasons for changing for the better, and in this case it's clear cut - you can find plenty of documentation on firewalls being a best practice for being connected to the Internet.
I'm a pee-on in the big scheme of Textron but that doesn't mean I haven't been able to get changes implemented (slooooowly to be sure, but still..), so there's no reason you shouldn't be able to do the same. If they can't justify even a $50 firewall how can they justify being on the 'net.
