As of yesterday, SUS DOES support service packs.
See http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/windowsupdate/sus/default.asp

It's getting closer....

Major drawback to SUS is that it can't deploy service packs.

We've recently evaluated these products:

SUS - Free, but doesn't support service packs

GFI LanGuard - $900 for unlimited IP, not a complete solution as it
needs SUS for patch management. Has other security features though.

UpdateExpert - $2000 for 150 machines. Complete solution, but seems
buggy. Not impressed with tech support. More difficult to learn and use
than...

HFNetChk Pro - $3000 for 150 machines. Best support, best interface.
Most expensive.

We selected HFNetChk Pro.

We're using SUS and are fairly happy with it at this point. There are
some annoyances, especially because we can't really force reboot
machines (24x7 shop in some areas), but in general it has been
performing quite well.
