Yes, I use precisely that, which is why probably why I don't have the
issue that Kirk points out.

By any chance, do you use (something like)
\setuplanguage[en][spacing=packed]
? If so, you won't get a bit of extra space between sentences.
If you don't have spacing=packed, then perhaps something else is having a
similar effect.
