There is a little module in "Brian's ~/.textadept file" on the Textadept wiki that uses aspell to do spell-checking. I'm going to give that a try. I can also try using SCOWL plus the method you describe, SCOWL is the word-list from which aspell, ispell and hunspell dictionaries are built.
