I think you should write the acronym in capitals. Then obtain small
caps as follows:
\defineXMLargument[acronym]\doacronym
\def\doacronym#1{{\sc\lowercase{\CapStretch{#1}}}}
I have inserted the latter without the \CapStretch, which I do not
like.
