You can view the benefits of lsof under the "local usage" link of ntop. 
Nmap's usage appears in that you see the breakdown of the different 
services(ftp, mail, nfs, etc) I'm not too sure about the second one, but I 
know about the first, since I've tried it both ways. If you don't install 
lsof, you won't see anything under "local usage"
