But writen for RH. I use Debian :)
And I even removed any png.h and compiled libpng-1.2.5 and gd-1.8.4. But the only
effect is:

ntop:~/ntop# ./configure --with-libpng-lib=/usr/lib/
--with-libpng-include=/usr/local/include/
[blabla]
checking for png.h... yes
checking for main in -lpng... no
[blabla]
ntop:~/ntop# ls -la /usr/lib/libpng.so
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           32 Oct 23 21:16 /usr/lib/libpng.so ->
/usr/local/lib/libpng.so.3.1.2.5

http://packages.debian.org/stable/devel/libpng-dev.html
ntop:~/ntop# apt-get install libpng-dev
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Sorry, libpng-dev is already the newest version.
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
ntop:~/ntop#

Did I miss anything?

Helmut
