Grade 10 OSSLT information Each year, students in Grade 10 across the province write the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) administered by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). First-time eligible students are those who commenced high school in September 2015. This year, the OSSLT will take place on Thursday, March 30, 2017. We will run a special schedule that day as all Grade 10 students will be writing the test and all teachers will be involved in its supervision. There are no regular classes for students in Grade 9, 11 and 12. Grade 10 students will be dismissed for the day at the end of the test (approximately 11:45 am) and the school will close for an afternoon staff meeting. The OSSLT measures whether students are meeting the minimum standard for literacy (reading and writing) across all subjects up to the end of Grade 9. Successful completion of the OSSLT is a requirement for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). There are supports for students who do not pass the OSSLT, including an opportunity to rewrite the test or to take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course. For students with special education needs, some accommodations that are consistent with regular classroom assessment practices are permitted on the provincial tests. If your son/daughter receives accommodations through an Individual Education Plan (IEP), you will receive a letter before the OSSLT outlining the room location and accommodations your son/daughter will be able to access for the test. Since the content of EQAO's tests is based entirely on The Ontario Curriculum, the tests should not require special preparation. Students are simply asked to demonstrate the curriculum-based knowledge and skills they have developed through their regular classroom work. They can prepare as they would for any other secondary school test. You can use the test materials released on EQAO's website to become familiar with the format of the provincial tests and the types of questions asked At North Toronto, we have put in extra supports for students who are re-writing the test after an initial unsuccessful attempt and for students who are new to the country and will be writing the test for the first time. This remedial preparation will help with reading and writing expectations as well as practical test-taking strategies to help ensure student success. Your son or daughter will be contacted by the English department and Ms. Kurtz, Vice-Principal, to arrange the dates and time of this extra support. Have a restful long week-end, everyone!
