Folder Redirection does offer a certain amount of mitigation - but as an AppSense specialist, this sort of cross-platform non-interoperability is good news. AppSense is about the only solution I've seen delivering unified desktop look and feel across incompatible OSes - I've just recently used Personalization Server to deliver standardized settings between published 2003 and 2008 R2 desktops, without needing multiple profile locations.
