  Yah, you really want DOS, running on the bare metal, for a recovery
effort like this.

  Fortunately, DOS can boot from floppy, so you don't need to do
anything special.  Just put the disk in and reboot.  I can send you a
disk image if you need one.  It even sets up a RAM disk so you can put
utilities there.  It's high tech stuff from 1995... ;-)

  Yikes.  No, I never had that pleasure.

  Until circa 2005, we did have a piece of test equipment that only
worked with 720 KB DD floppies.  A HD disk formatted at 720 KB
wouldn't work.  I had to hunt down old stock on eBay.
