I would thing dell software tests the hardware , but if the filesystem is
corrupt somehow it won´t help. Use the Hiren´s boot to run its minimal windows
( run from the usb drive, not from the computer´s hard disk ) and then run
chkdsk /f /r in the prompt.

Also, when booting from Hiren´s, lool for unusual files in the root of the boot
drive, and also if something is strange in boot.ini ( or if somehow it was
deleted )

I ran the "dell diagnostics" that runs outside the OS, i think it was boot to
utility- I already backed up the data

by "integrated disk test " you mean chkdsk, or a hard disk test software ?

If there is an important app in it, can you clone the disk to another before
proceeding with diagnosis / fixes ? Some may cause the problem to become worse.

Provided you have the above backup in other disk, have you run chkdsk /f /r
in the disk ? was it part of an array ?

    hi all,

have a winxp thats bluescreening, i ran hirens usb boot, fixmbr (yes on the
correct drive and partition)

an still no go- the drive is not faulty as integrated disk test is clean,
and if I choose bootXP from hiren's it works fine-

the cd rom drive is buste so i cannot wasnt able to use recovery console, i
ordered a usb cd rom- but in the interim anything else I can do? I cant format
reinstall because there is a proprietary app on it-

but the goal is to correct it via recovery console and clone the disk when
the new tower arrives- as the new tower will be sata (current is pata) anything
to watch out for when cloning-

I presume to login to current
    dvc mgr
    unistall ide controller

    - clone
reboot and let windows find drive controller

    TIA

    and happy holidays

    JP
