Thanks for the feedback. It certainly looks like your solution is secure. The only point I am making is that HIPAA is way beyond most security requirements. In addition, the penalties can be draconian. They can (and have) sent small agencies (like the no-profit Hospice I support) out of business.

Hank,

We are under the same constraints plus others and the application has been completely approved; we have never had an auditor complaint or other recommendation. Also we have been using it since it's introduction (I think over 10 years) and have never had a security related issue.

The data is stored on a "cloud" as is everything these days (may go by other names but is affectively the same) but it is not publicly available and is located deep underground in a very secure site, Iron Mountain. There are other backup services accessible on semi public clouds, by way of the internet as you know, but for this one an installed agent is the only way to connect and all connections are very secure. I am not selling Connected and it is not perfect, other than its security record.

For server/data center backups we do have an in-house system for quicker file restoration and other reasons I cannot discus in this forum.

Please forgive any typos I am writing this on an iPad onscreen keypad. Michael...

PS I work for a very large insurance company with thousands of end-points so we have a lot of experience with security issues and desktop security/patch management is my primary job.

The only concern I would have is that the data is stored on the cloud. The data I would be interested in getting off of our clinicians' laptops is HIPAA PHI information that I would be reluctant to store there.

Autonomy Connected is what we use. There is no need to wait for a system to connect to the domain since the backup can also be done via a secure internet connection.

DLO is now altogether a separate product. Earlier it was clubbed with Backup Exec & the feature which you are talking about is there in DLO. We are using DLO 7.0 whereas latest is 7.5

Just curious if anyone is using alternatives to Symantec Backup Exec's DLO option (desktop/laptop option). Basically it provides a mechanism for backing up user laptops when the person comes back on-site and plugs into the corporate network, it will start to backup/sync their Documents folders, Desktop folders, etc. automatically to a local network share without user interaction. I have a customer that is using it on Backup Exec 2010, but Backup Exec 2012 has gotten rid of the DLO option from what I understand. These are the kind of users that will never choose to, or remember to, backup their files to a network share or home folder or run manual backups with an external USB on their own, but they'll be the first to complain when their laptop dies and their data is lost.

Curious as to other alternatives out there for mobile users to -automate- backing up their files when they come back to the office. DLO was decent, but...

 Thanks
 J
